American Exploration: Koreatown, Los Angeles
May 2025
Koreatown, Los Angeles, took root in the 1960s as waves of Korean immigrants settled around Olympic Boulevard, creating a neighborhood shaped by resilience, entrepreneurship, and faith. Over the decades, it has grown into a vibrant cultural hub where corner stores, family restaurants, and churches anchor a deeply interconnected community. Koreatown and its community have served as a vital gathering space where Korean immigrants found language support, social ties, and a sense of belonging. That spirit of grit and mutual care lives on in the work of Ray Rose, a Korean American clothing designer whose brand, RRose From Concrete, champions the underdog. Though not based in Koreatown, Ray’s ethos is closely aligned with its values: his work is rooted in discipline, reverence, and the belief that beauty can rise from struggle - an homage to his mother, Rose, and to the quiet strength found in communities like this one.
