American Exploration: Little Havana, Miami

May 2025

Little Havana, Miami’s vibrant Cuban-American neighborhood, grew out of waves of immigrants who brought with them rich traditions, music, and an indomitable spirit. Over the decades, it has blossomed into a cultural heartbeat filled with colorful murals, bustling cafés, and the rhythm of salsa and dominoes in its streets. At the heart of this community is Guillermina Hernandez, affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Little Havana,” whose decades of dedication and activism helped preserve the neighborhood’s heritage and unity. Equally emblematic is Joaquin “Chino” Dominguez Mesa, a beloved figure at Domino Park, known for his infectious laughter, charismatic presence, and love of life, still dancing into the night and embodying the joy and resilience that define Little Havana. Together, they represent the soul of a community rooted in history, connection, and celebration.
